Newsletter...
Newsletter 1/2012 11th January 2012
Dear Parents,
The Staff and I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year and trust that you had a peaceful and restful Festive Season. We extend a warm welcome to all our new families and learners and wish you a long and happy association with Glenashley Junior Primary! We welcome back our “old” learners and their families and trust that you had an enjoyable and restful holiday.
The new year has got off to an excellent start. This is due to the careful planning and preparation done by all members of staff during their holiday period.
The Staff of Glenashley Junior Primary and I wish to emphasise our total commitment to Education in general and to the parents and pupils of our school in particular. We are very aware of the importance of the partnership between the home and the school and encourage our parents to become fully involved in the activities of the school and in the academic and sporting progress of their children. The Foundation Phase of your child’s education is probably the most important stage in his / her development and research shows that those children who do well at school usually have parents who take an active interest in their child’s education and activities as this indicates to the child that you believe in the importance of his / her education and progress. Our school has an excellent reputation and the results of our past pupils give ample proof of the excellent grounding your children receive at this school.
We are blessed with a stable and committed teaching staff but this year we do have a few changes. We welcome Mrs Willis, Mrs Roelofsz and Mrs Timothy to the Pre-School and Grade 2 respectively. We wish Mrs Willis a long and happy association with our school and congratulate Mrs Roelofsz and Mrs Timothy on their new positions on the staff.
We were delighted to receive the news that Miss Airey got engaged to Mr Doyle during the holidays. Congratulations Miss Airey! We would like to wish you and Gary all the happiness for the future!

Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy:
Mrs Janet Potterton and Mrs Amy Engelbrecht, both Occupational Therapists and Mrs Kerry Gianadda and Daphne Chetty, Speech and Language Therapists, are available to provide support during school hours, for those learners who need additional intervention. We are most grateful to them for their professional contribution to the services offered at our school.
PLEASE NOTE: Our Grade 3 learners go home at 12.30p.m. on Fridays.
School Hours:
Pre-Primary, Grade 1 and Grade 2 : 7.45a.m. - 12.30p.m.
Grade 3 - Monday to Thursdays : 7.45a.m. - 13.50p.m.
Fridays : 7.45a.m. - 12.30p.m.
We encourage our pupils to be punctual, but as they are still dependent on their parents, it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that they arrive at school timeously and are collected from school within 15 minutes of the dismissal time. Children may be brought to school from 7.15 a.m. and we would like them to be in their classrooms by 7.30a.m., the latest, to give them the opportunity to unpack their school bags, greet their teacher and friends and get ready for the day.
PLEASE NOTE that school closes at 12.30p.m. every Friday for all grades. Our Aftercare will run as normal.
Please ensure that your child is fetched promptly at 12.30p.m. as no child will be allowed to wait at the gate for more than 15 minutes after closing time.
PLEASE NOTE that we have developed a Policy for “Lateness” which is included below.
Policy on Lateness:
To ensure the safety and security of your child/children and staff, all gates will be locked at 7.45a.m. Any child who arrives at school after this time, will be required to enter the school via the ADELAIDE DRIVE main pedestrian entrance.
He/she then has to report to the office where the child’s name will be recorded. Should your child habitually arrive at school after the 7.45a.m. bell has sounded, the parent/s will be contacted by the Principal. This includes all Pre-Primary children!
As Registers are taken first thing in the morning, children who arrive late for school, disrupting the school programme, will, regrettably, be marked ABSENT.
Adelaide Drive Entrance:
Once again it has been brought to my attention that a number of parents who arrive early at the Adelaide Drive entrance to wait for their child to finish school, ring the bell at the main pedestrian entrance to go and wait either outside the Tuck Shop or Media Centre. Firstly, this is most disruptive to the Admin Staff who have to continually open the gate, one by one, but more importantly it is a security risk to our pupils if the gate is left opened in error, when our staff are busy. Secondly, when parents wait outside the Media Centre/Computer Room we have found that it unfortunately interferes with lessons that are taking place. Please will you assist us by waiting until the scholar gate is opened, which will enable you a few minutes to wait inside by the pathway, before the bell rings and your child is dismissed from class.
The Adelaide Drive pedestrian gate to the entrance of the school, will only be opened during school hours to parents wanting to enter the Administration Block.
School Uniform:
We are very proud of our school uniform and expect all our pupils to be correctly and neatly dressed. Socks, shoes and hats are to be worn to and from school and also after school if the children accompany their parents to other schools or to the shops. In order to instill a respect for our African sun, the children are required to wear their hats during playtime. Please ensure that your child wears his/her hat to school every day as they will not be able to play on the field during playtime if they do not have hats.
N.B. UPDATE OF PERSONAL DETAILS:
It is vitally important that the school be notified promptly of any changes in personal details, e.g. change of address, change of telephone numbers, etc. Our Secretaries have on occasions spent many hours trying to contact parents in cases of emergency. This can be very distressing for the child/children involved.
Please complete the relevant form which your child will bring home today and return to school by Friday, 13th January 2012.
Personal Accident Insurance:
Our insurers, Alexander Forbes, offer insurance cover for school children. The details of the scheme can be found in the attached letter. We seldom have serious accidents or injuries at our school however I encourage all parents to participate in this insurance scheme, particularly if you do not have Medical Aid. Payment should be sent to school in a clearly marked envelope by Friday, 13th January 2012 and cheques made payable to Glenashley Junior Primary.
Policy on Medicines at School:
In very rare cases where your child is to be given Ritalin at school, the teacher MUST be informed in writing. Ideally Ritalin should be administered by the parent. No other medication should be sent to school and no child is allowed to keep any medication in his/her school bag.
Tuck Shop:
The Tuck shop will be open every Friday at first break starting from Friday, 20th January 2012.
Ice Cream Sales:
Ice Creams are sold every Thursday at first break starting from Thursday, 19th January 2012. The cost is R3.00 each.
Newspapers:
We have been able to raise a considerable amount of money from the sale of Newspapers and magazines and would like to continue collecting them this year. Please send your old newspapers and magazines to school in tidy bundles.
“MySchool” Supporter Card Application:
Glenashley Junior Primary School is part of the MySchool Community. Funds are raised for our school on a monthly basis. By simply presenting your MySchool Supporter Card when you shop at one of the many MySchool partners e.g. Woolworths, a percentage of your purchase is given to our school!.
The card each family receives is personalised, bearing the family name and the name of the school. In order to print the cards and to match each card on the database to the relevant school/s, VMP requires the enclosed Supporter Card Application Form to be filled in and returned to school by Friday, 13th January 2012.
Makro School Rebate Programme Application:
Makro Springfield offers our parents an opportunity to support our school when making purchases at their Store. Makro will link your card to the Glenashley Junior Primary School Banner Group and an allocated percentage of the profit made on your purchases at Makro Springfield will be donated to the school. In order to link or apply for a Makro card, please complete The Makro School Rebate Programme form which we have enclosed, and return to school by Friday, 13th January 2012.
School Fees:
Please note that School Fees are payable in advance. It is only due to the financial support we receive from our parents that we are able to maintain our school as a centre of excellence.
